Residents of Ochima in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State have taken to the streets in peaceful protest following the recent discovery of a live explosive in their farmland. The community attributes the dangerous find to military exercises carried out by the Nigerian Army’s 82 Division, Enugu, and has raised alarm over repeated threats to life and property.
The villagers marched with placards accusing the Army of endangering their lives through the use of live ammunition, missiles, and bombs during shooting range drills conducted near their settlement. According to them, this is not an isolated incident—similar explosives were discovered in 2024, and in February 2022, a woman named Gloria was killed by a stray bullet during a military operation.
The protesters lamented the trauma and disruption caused by the Army’s activities, saying they can no longer farm, fetch water, or live without fear. Town Union President General, Gerald Okwesili Ubaka, emphasized that bullets have damaged buildings and instilled fear across the community. He noted that the bomb discovered this year was reported to the police, leading to its safe detonation by the anti-bomb squad on May 10, 2025.
The residents, who previously took legal action against military encroachment, are now appealing for urgent government intervention to protect their lives and restore peace. Hon. Engr. Onyebuchi Otoboeze, Senior Special Adviser on Works in Igbo-Etiti, acknowledged the threat and praised the local government’s swift response. Mr. Lawrence Igwe, Station Catechist of Holy Child Catholic Church, also urged government action to prevent future tragedies.
