The Chairman of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area in Enugu State, Chijioke Ezugwu, has established a specialized farm protection squad to address the growing threat of armed attacks on agricultural communities. The initiative comes as part of broader security measures to safeguard farmers and restore confidence in rural areas plagued by criminal activities.
According to a statement by the chairman’s Media Adviser, Chief Kingsley Onyeji, the newly formed squad will focus on securing farmlands and ensuring farmers can work without fear of violence or crop destruction. The local government has also embarked on extensive forest clearing operations along key routes, including Ezukolo, Abbi, Nrobo, and Nimbo roads, to eliminate potential ambush spots used by criminals.
“Uzo-Uwani has long suffered from road ambushes, with travelers frequently targeted on these routes,” Onyeji said. “These attacks have not only caused physical harm but have also created a pervasive sense of insecurity in our communities.”
In addition to the farm protection squad, the council has established a rapid response team within the existing neighborhood watch framework. Equipped with patrol vans and modern communication systems, the team is trained to handle emergencies ranging from violent attacks to robberies and road accidents. Their prompt intervention has reportedly prevented several incidents from escalating into larger crises.
The chairman has also intensified intelligence-gathering efforts, procured advanced security equipment, and strengthened collaboration with formal security agencies. Community sensitization programs and stakeholder engagements have been prioritized to foster collective vigilance.
Ezugwu issued a stern warning to traditional rulers against engaging in questionable land deals with outsiders who may later turn out to be criminals. “Any traditional ruler found complicit in such practices will face severe consequences,” he declared.
The multi-layered security approach aims to create a safer environment for residents and visitors alike, with the council chairman assuring that Uzo-Uwani is becoming increasingly secure under these new measures.
