Enugu State’s federal representatives have unanimously endorsed the Federal Government’s proposed concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, describing it as a transformative step for regional economic growth. In a joint statement signed by all eight members of the Enugu State Caucus in the House of Representatives, including Nnolim Nnaji, Martins Oke, and Dennis Agbo, the lawmakers emphasized the urgent need to address the airport’s longstanding infrastructural deficits through private-sector collaboration.
The caucus highlighted the facility’s incomplete cargo terminals, outdated runway, and inadequate international terminals, which have limited its functionality despite its “international” designation over two decades ago. They noted that these shortcomings have disproportionately impacted Southeast businesses and travelers, citing frequent runway closures and a lack of direct global flights as major setbacks.
Clarifying misconceptions, the lawmakers stressed that concessioning—a time-bound public-private partnership (PPP)—differs from outright privatization, ensuring government retention of ownership and regulatory oversight while leveraging private investment for upgrades. “This model is globally proven to modernize public infrastructure without ceding control,” the statement read.
Appealing for public support, the caucus urged accelerated action from federal authorities, arguing that timely concessioning would unlock the airport’s potential as a regional trade and tourism hub. “Expediting this process will catalyze job creation, boost commerce, and finally position Enugu as a true international gateway,” they concluded, reaffirming their commitment to advocating for Southeast development priorities.
