A major disruption to gas supplies has plunged nine local government areas in Abia State into darkness following technical failures at critical infrastructure near Port Harcourt. Multiple industry sources confirm simultaneous incidents at Obigbo and Agbada gas gathering facilities – key nodes in the energy supply chain powering the Geometric Power Plant in Osisioma.
The cascading effect has forced Heirs Energies to abruptly suspend gas deliveries to the 188MW Aba power station, leaving distributor Aba Power scrambling to source emergency electricity. Managing Director Ugo Opiegbe revealed the utility now relies on a meager 25MW from the Niger Delta Power Holding Company – barely 18% of normal capacity – during what should have been uninterrupted Easter holiday supply.
“Safety protocols demanded immediate supply suspension while engineers address the leaks,” explained veteran gas engineer Vincent Chukwueke, formerly of Shell.
Residents and businesses across the affected LGAs now endure prolonged blackouts during peak holiday periods, with restoration timelines uncertain. While Aba Power promises normalization within 48 hours
