The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, is repositioning its renowned Sculpture Park as a major tourism attraction in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision to make Enugu a tourism hub. IMT Rector Professor Austin Nweze revealed this during an inspection tour of the institution’s art facilities alongside management staff and alumni.
Professor Nweze emphasized plans to integrate the Sculpture Park with Enugu’s growing tourism circuit, particularly the nearby International Conference Center. “We’re strategically positioning IMT so visitors to the conference center will naturally extend their stay to experience our unique Sculpture Park,” he stated.

The park, already the largest of its kind in Nigerian tertiary institutions according to Faculty of Art Dean Mr. Ayo Adewunmi, will be upgraded into a full-fledged cultural center. The expansion will incorporate archival materials and historical displays, including a reconstructed Enugu coal mine exhibit to showcase the region’s industrial heritage.
Notably, the park features striking student-created artworks like the Udi Wine Tapper, Ijele Masquerade, and Coal Miner sculptures – all crafted from recycled materials including pea shells and groundnut husks. Named after benefactor Elder Kalu Kalu, the space serves both as an artistic showcase and memorial to notable Nigerian contributors.

The inspection extended to IMT’s Entrepreneurship Development Center where students receive practical training in diverse skills from fashion design to chemical production. At the Mass Communication department, the rector commissioned a new student relaxation lounge donated by 1996 alumni, with department head Dr. Robert Madu acknowledging management’s support in securing accreditation through equipment upgrades.
Professor Nweze briefed alumni on institutional advancements including full course accreditation, infrastructure improvements, and an upcoming visit by Germany’s ambassador. Alumni President Mazi Agodi Kanu outlined their contributions – from expanding chapters nationwide to scholarship programs – while appealing for support to build IMT’s first sports stadium to host intercollegiate games.
The event culminated in inaugurating a geographically diverse Board of Trustees for the alumni association, featuring prominent members like Dr. Uchechukwu Ogah and Prof. Austin Nweze, cementing IMT’s collaborative approach to institutional development.
